I liked, commented, replied and engaged with the real world at my recent book signing, which was also my first book signing. Social Media is an amazing way to connect, but I enjoyed my time with live, smiling humans, too. I loved the fun couple who shrieked when they saw my book cover poster- they had a daughter named Charli, too. I favorited them.
I enjoyed fielding the friendly questions:
“How long did it take you to write your book?”
“What’s it about?”
I can blurt out my elevator pitch for The Golden Age of Charli-RSVP in a confident, mostly non-shaky voice now. But, I am not quite sure how to answer how long it took me to write my first book. If I say the truth- “about three months for the first draft”- will my questioner assume I didn’t work hard enough on my opus, that it’s a slap-dash affair? Should I say I wrote my book in a cold, dark attic while scrabbling for bread crumbs?
So, after a few questions of that sort I decided to use misdirection.
Friendly person wearing a purple scarf- “How long did it take you to write this?”
I gave myself a solid B+ for my first appearance. I did a good job with my venue and set up. I appeared at an art gallery/gift shop during our town’s Holiday Festival. I displayed my books in a wooden wine box and had plenty of business cards and bookmarks, plus my Chinese lucky money cat. Note to self- for future events, check the times and plan to have a book signing when more people will be around. (Well I thought three in the morning would attract the last-call patrons, just kidding.)
And I really replied, “I enjoyed every moment of time it took me to write my book. My goal was to create a fun, positive and encouraging story. You’ll enjoy it!”
I am a writer, blogger, book reviewer, and bon vivant and encourager. I have lived my entire life in Tropical Ohio. My goal is to make friends with everyone in the world. I am writing a fiction series, The Golden Age of Charli, that presents the problems and praises, and the love and laughter of family life and retirement.
