I scroll through thousands of tweets to find books that pique my interest. Then I click, read and review my book finds so I can share my curated list with you.
What books pique my interest and beckon to me?
A cover that is creative, lovely and inviting.
An author with an interesting bio on Twitter who is an engaging poster.
A book blurb that sounds fresh, intriguing or lyrical.
I have no special formula– just “aha! I can’t wait to read this book.”
I do not solicit manuscripts. I curate these on my own. Because…I am a writer who loves to read, learn and encourage!
This week I read:
“He looked the mirror, allowed a crooked smile and slowly nodded to the current version of himself.”
As I scrolled through my Twitter feed I saw several positive mentions of Lethal Medicine. This book piqued my interest because the author is a pharmacist and says he likes to explore lethal drugs. As he tells us on his website:
“I’m absolutely smitten with the idea of murder and mayhem, not in real life of course, but in a well-written mystery. That’s why I write: to transport you into a world where the real and the unreal merge. And to add spice to the intrigue, I mix in a healthy dose of pharmaceuticals. You see, that’s my passion and my profession.
I used to say, “Live better through chemistry”. Now I say, “Die better through chemistry”.
Sounded like a prescription for a good read!
Lethal Medicine is a thriller from the start. I liked how the book jumped into the characters and twists and turns of the plot from the first page of the story. Partners Rosie Young and Vince Mendez are detectives who are convinced that Jon Masters is the bad guy. Jon and his wife Gwen are running a successful infusion pharmacy when their world is rocked by allegations of murder and a drug study that is not what it seems to be. Author Murray flavors his work with the atmosphere of south Texas, which adds zest to the story and features in the mystery.
Lethal Medicine will intrigue readers who enjoy their murders and mysteries with a shot of medicine. Great title -we assume our medicine and practitioners will be life-giving and not deadly. I liked learning about the pharmacy business. Mr. Murray has experience in this field and at times his book reads more like a business or scientific report, but overall this is a nifty dose of mystery. Enjoy your “medicine”!
James J. Murray has recently published another medical mystery and he has a collection of short stories, too. Learn more about him here.
