She’s told that he invited her on his deathbed, and he’s very keen for her to attend, so she heads off to a dilapidated old farm house in a remote part of Wales. When she gets there she discovers that only five other people have been invited to the funeral. None of them knows who he is either.
NO ONE GOING TO THIS FUNERAL HAS EVER HEARD OF THE DECEASED. WHAT IS GOING ON??
Then they are told that they have 20 hours to work out why they have been invited in order to inherit a million pounds.
Who is this guy and why are they there? And what of the ghostly goings on in the ancient old building?
Featuring Mary Brown, star of the Adorable Fat Girl series of books, in her greatest adventure yet.

Adorable Fat Girl and the Mysterious Invitation by Bernice Bloom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Adorable Fat Girl where have you been all my life?! How can this be book 9 in the Adorable Fat Girl series, 40,000 total copies sold, and I’ve never heard of Mary Brown, the main character also known as Adorable Fat Girl?
Well, I’m delighted to have finally met her and I loved everything about this book. Before I tell you a bit about the book, please don’t worry that this is book 9. The author has created a wonderful stand-alone read, probably the best stand-alone I’ve read. Aside from a few brief references to Mary’s earlier escapades, this book flowed perfectly for this first-time reader.
Also, you may think from the title that this is just a silly rom com. That’s what I thought. Yes, it’s fun and entertaining, but this book is a well-written mystery, with a clever plot unlike any other, and with good thoughts about life.
On with the book review!! Mary Brown is overweight and she deals with some body-image and food issues, but she also is an upbeat, pleasant and regular gal. One day she receives an invitation to a funeral. She and five other people have been invited to a hotel in a small town in Wales for the service and reading of the will. They are all astounded because none of them have any idea who the deceased was. But they have to figure out their connection in 20 hours or they will forfeit a large inheritance. Amazing, right?
Part of the story is about Mary and the group of six and how they handle this event. The other part is an interesting look back that takes place from World War II to 1976 and is quite moving and lovely in its presentation. By the end of the story, Mary realizes that a good deed can resonate for generations.
This book is a well-written, well-paced, and as even Mary Brown noted, in some ways it is similar to an Agatha Christie mystery- only funnier and at the same time, more poignant. Once you have read this book, I’m sure you will be like me and will immediately begin to read the first 8 books in the series. (And according to the Author’s notes, there are more to come!)
I received an Advanced Review Copy from Rachels Random Resources and this is my honest review.
My name is Bernice Bloom and I write funny novels about a crazy lady called Mary Brown in my ‘Adorable Fat Girl’ series.
Mary is funny, gorgeous and bonkers. She’s also about six stone overweight. When she realises she can’t cross her legs and has trouble bending over to tie her shoelaces without wheezing like an elderly chain-smoker it’s time to take action. But what action? She’s tried every diet under the sun.
This series is the hysterical story of what happens when Mary joins ‘Fat Club’ where she meets a cast of funny characters and one particular man who catches her eye.
The series follows Mary as she goes on safari, on a cruise, to a weekend yoga retreat and on an incredible adventure when she receives a mysterious invitation to a funeral.
The stories are laugh-out-loud funny and will resonate with anyone who has dieted, tried to keep up with any sort of exercise programme or spent 10 minutes in a changing room trying to extricate herself from a way too-small garment that she ambitiously tried on and is now completely stuck in. xx
