Puppies, dogs and poems make for a delightful new book from one of my favorite children’s authors, and all-around creative and encouraging friend, Pat Furstenberg. I know you’ll want to get right to this gem, so below you will find all of the book info, as well as an introduction to Pat, and…a special poem!
Celebrating the simple things in life as seen through the eyes of our old time favourite furry friends, “As Good as Gold” is a volume of poetry revealing the talent and humour we always knew our dogs possessed.
Dogs are full of questions, yet they are famed sellers of innocence especially when it comes to explaining their mishaps and often foolish effervescence through ponderings such as “Why IS a Cat Not Like a Dog”, “As Brown as Chocolate”, “Silver Stars and Puppy Tail” or, best yet, “Dog or Book?”
A book with an enormous heart for readers of all ages, it includes 35 poems and haiku accompanied by expressive portraits of our canine friends.

If you lay still when you open your eyes,
And wiggle your toes and stretch your arms,
If you listen to birds, chirping “Morning!” outside,
Singing to the trees, the wide sky and the sun, yawning wide,
Then you’ll hear them,
All three.
One is named Gimmy, from “gimme more food”;
One is named Oatie, always in a frisky mood;
The third one is Love, but so I’ve been told
That they are, all three, nick-named GOLD.
D? That’s for “Dear”:
“Dear me,” three pups in a household!
So early morning when you stretch your toes,
You wiggle your bum and you scratch your nose,
Listen closely and you will hear…
One set of paws bouncing pad-pad, pad-pad, quite near;
Then shortly, a second one, after a high-pitched arf-arf!
Third comes a boom and the ah, uh of panting and jump.
And you know that
Down the stairs, all three, GOLD pups bounce.
They would be thirsty, you think to yourself,
Or hungry, makes sense, you know them well.
But if you don’t hear the chomp or the crunch
Of three pups eating food in a bunch,
And instead you hear rrowff and bow-wow,
And the freh-freh of wet fur and even a growl…
Then you should know, you’re in for a surprise,
But count to three before you make for the stairs.
And remember they’re GOLD, you named them so,
Not for their fur or their names, but their hearts, always aglow.
And when you’ll open that kitchen door
And call “puppies of GOLD!” – surveying the mess on the floor,
Don’t be surprised if they even sit, all three:
For in their hearts they are as good as… GOLD.
Patricia Furstenberg came to writing through reading. She always carries a notebook and a pen, although at times she jots down her ideas on the back of till slips or types them on her phone.
Patricia enjoys writing for children because she can take abstract, grown-up concepts and package them in humorous, child-friendly ideas while adding sensitivity and lots of love. What fuels her is an exhilarating need to write and… coffee: “How many cups have had this morning?” “None.” “Plus?” “Five cups.”
You will want to look for all of Pat’s books, the beloved Joyful Trouble, The Cheetah and the Dog, Puppy, 12 Months of Rhymes and Smiles.
She is a Huffington Post contributor and pens the Sunday Column for MyPuppyclub.net as well as dabbing in freelancing. After completing her Medical Degree in Romania she moved to South Africa where she now lives with her husband, children and their dogs.
