JENA’S REVIEW
Life Lessons by J.E. Rowney
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
You will enjoy getting to know Violet and her friends in Book One of the Lessons of a Student Midwife series. Violet and her best friend Zoe are off to Uni together, to study for their dream careers. Violet is in the Midwife program and Zoe is in the Teaching program. Life Lessons is the story of their first year at school.
Violet knows she wants to be a Midwife- part of something emotional, intimate and intense. She is a smart, calm, easy-going young woman. She suffers from panic attacks which may have a serious impact on her place in the program. Zoe is more outgoing and confident and seems to enjoy her first year. Both of them are nice girls who stay at home and study. They share a house with a young man named Luke. Zoe flirts with Luke, but readers will have to wait until the next book to see if anything develops. A cute part of the story involves an imaginary roommate.
Readers who are looking forward to some medical drama will enjoy the stories of Violet’s training. In spite of her anxiety, she truly cares about her patients and connects with them. Violet’s year ends on a high note with happy thoughts for her second year of training.
Life Lessons is written in the first person, which is especially effective in showing Violet’s anxiety attacks as well as her hospital training. This is a sweet and gentle read, with a touch of humor and a great deal of inspiration. Life Lessons is a good title. Violet is learning how to bring life into the world as she also learns more about living her own life. I look forward to the next book in the series. I received a digital advance review copy from Rachel’s Random Resources and this is my honest review.
