Alison and David have been engaged for so long that even Alison’s mother has given up asking when, but it’s second time around for both of them and they’re not in any particular hurry.
That said, Alison is beginning to wonder if living with her has put David off the idea of marriage so when he suggests they set a date she is delighted. But that date is six months’ away and a lot can happen in six months – especially if you’re Alison!
‘My son’s been arrested, Great-aunt Millie’s fallen in love, my best friend suspects her husband of having an affair, and I still need to lose weight. How on earth can I think about getting married?’

JENA’S REVIEW
What a happy book cover! We see Alisson, the somewhat befuddled main character walking happily with her besties, Bev and Pippa. This Year Maybe is the second book in the Aliss’s Adventures Book 2 series. As I read This Year, Maybe I sensed that there may have been a first book, but I had no problem getting to know Alison and her friends and family. So, if you haven’t read the first book, don’t worry- you can jump into book 2.
The first book in the series told of Alison turning 50 and receiving a divorce decree after her husband runs off with a “bimbo”. Thus, began Alison’s “year of well-intentioned ineptitude”. If you have read the first book in the series, This Time, Next Year, you will already know that Alison needs her pals.
This Year Maybe is told in the form of Alisson’s diary entries. Her New Year’s resolution is “to be a better person.” Not sure if she achieved that goal-who does? But she certainly experienced many hilarious, embarrassing and agonizing moments- often all three happened at the same time. The big event is that Allison and David decide to finally make it official and get married. Bev and Pippa to the rescue- to organize the nuptials and plan the “hen do”. The friends are also there with wine, tea, biscuits and a shoulder to cry on when various family problems arise.
The highlight of the book for me was the hen party- filled with tropics and troubles. I appreciated the humor in the book, especially the casual mention of “masks” and “buffets”.
Author Liz Hinds has also written a book that I loved, The Dog-Walking Club. That book is a big hug of friendship and a cuddly dog by your side. It’s a quiet, heartfelt and inspirational book, poignant and emotional, whereas This Year Maybe is more slapstick humor. Overall, This Year Maybe is a fun read.
Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for a review copy. This is my honest review.
