As I was zooming around running errands I stopped at the country home of my friends, Randy and Tina. After hellos and hugs, they showed me their new babies- chickens in a lovely outdoor area. The chickens were beautiful, sociable and welcoming. (as were Randy and Tina!) I heard the roosters crow! Yes, I am a city gal. I can’t remember all the names, but they have Plymouth and Rhode Island chickens, as well as a few mallards and white ducks. A raccoon recently helped himself to their “Easter egg” chickens who can produce colored eggs depending on what they are fed.
Tina and Randy explained how the cozy area for their chickens has enough trees and bushes to protect them from danger from the sky such as eagles, and possibly drones? The chickens are fed good quality grain and old produce that Randy and Tina collect from groceries. The flock? brood? posse? of chickens bustled to see Randy when he appeared with veggies in his hand. After admiring the scene, my friends gave me fresh eggs! Tina said that once the hens stop laying they become dinner. Ouch. And that’s why I’m a city gal.
My son who is the best fried egg chef and knows exactly how I like my eggs–over hard and crispy– made me two eggs this morning. Wow- just perfect! We tried the chicken eggs and the duck eggs and then we hard boiled some, as we were gifted a large supply of eggs.
Chickens are becoming popular to keep. Some say they are easy to care for, and everyone agrees they are entertaining to live with. Plus the eggs! Would you like to raise some kind of fowl?
