JENA’S REVIEW
A Bakery at the Little Duck Pond Cafe by Rosie Green
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I award this book five stars for the title, cover and the name of the village, which is Sunnybrook. Total delightfulness! What awaits us inside this book?
How about more sweetness! Readers, what’s between the covers will charm you. The ensemble of characters is vibrant and real- we have the owner of the café, Ellie, and her partner, her friend, a cute child, and Ellie’s older mother. As special treats, we have handsome Richard, as well as a happy puppy.
My favorite character is the first-person narrator, Kate. Kate and her family are involved in one of the most interesting occupations I have ever read about. Kate is not following in her family’s footsteps and heritage; she has recently graduated from a pastry culinary course and lives with her grandmother in London. With a little help from her loving and cunning Gran, Kate gets a trial job at the Bakery.
When Kate arrives in Sunnybrook, she “runs into” Richard and then she meets the second most interesting character in the story, Madison. Madison has also been hired to try-out at the bakery. (Madison has an interesting side-hustle.) Both Kate and Madison have things to overcome and resolve from their past lives.
So, we have plenty of cake to enjoy as we watch the ensemble try to work things out in Sunnybrook. Will the bakery get established? Will Kate and Madison continue to clash? And what about Richard? And the puppy? Will there be some happy ever after in Sunnybrook?
I have to say that I didn’t really “get” some of Kate’s worries as she dealt with her heritage, but overall, she was truly a special and memorable character.
This book is the fifth in “The Little Duck Pond Café” series, but the first book in the series I have read. It works as a true standalone. The author has done a great job of presenting the characters and the setting without trying to shoehorn in the backstory. Have a happy time in Sunnybrook!
Thanks to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for a review copy. This is my honest review.
Rosie Green has been scribbling stories ever since she was little. Back then they were rip-roaring adventure tales with a young heroine in perilous danger of falling off a cliff or being tied up by ‘the baddies’. Thankfully, Rosie has moved on somewhat, and now much prefers to write romantic comedies that melt your heart and make you smile, with really not much perilous danger involved at all, unless you count the heroine losing her heart in love.
Rosie’s brand new series of novellas is centred on life in a village café.Confetti at the Little Duck Pond Cafe will be the sixth in the series
