JENA’S REVIEW
The Start of Something Wonderful by Jane Lambert
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am reviewing the audiobook version of this story. The author herself recorded the book. This was the first time that I have listened to an audio book and I enjoyed it!
The author did a lovely and professional job recording the story. As she is an actress, she spoke with interest and enthusiasm. She has a higher-pitched voice and as she is British, she of course speaks with what to me is an accent, as I am American. Part of the time, I was marveling at how some of the words were pronounced!
I enjoyed the sound effects in the audiobook, such as boarding announcements on the plane, as it added to the realism and interest. Also, the author seemed to my ears to be great with all the different accents from the UK, and that was fun to hear, too. (But the American accent- ouch! No wonder we love British accents so much.)
One problem with audiobooks, is that sometimes it was hard for me to know when the scene changed. Also, the book took 9 hours and 40 minutes to listen to! But it was fun and enjoyable. Good job, Jane Lambert!!
Now, on to the story, which is a romantic comedy, and a debut novel for the author. Emily, the main character, is 40 and has her life all figured out. She’s a flight attendant, travels to exotic places, and has a handsome pilot boyfriend, who has a posh apartment in London. When Nigel suddenly breaks up with her, all this high life ends.
Emily chooses to remake herself- yay Emily! She decides to pursue her life-long goal of becoming an actress. She has to start on the bottom rung-but that’s what dreams are for! She takes acting classes, and soon lands a part as …Patty the Pineapple! Then she moves on to summer rep at the seaside, where she has to perform in a new play each week as well as find all the props. What does she discover as she keeps pressing on?
I liked that Emily kept trying and stayed positive, even as she was riding a bicycle and working as a cleaner to support herself. Do things get better for her? Well, with the help of a handsome Italian, they do. But most of Emily’s success is due to her own perseverance.
Well done, author Lambert- take your well-deserved curtain call for an entertaining and inspiring story!
Thanks to HQ Digital, HarperCollins Publishers Limited and Rachel’s Random Resources for the audiobook. This is my honest review.
