What happens when the future recaptures the past?
In a post-apocalyptic world the human race has evolved beyond us through genetic engineering – and we’ve been left behind to make amends for the damage inflicted on the earth.
The reversal of the extinction of long lost animals is key to our reparations and all of these are housed in the Museum of Evolution – along with another species of human that hasn’t existed for 30,000 years.
Elise belongs to the lowest order of humans, the Sapiens. She lives in an ostracised community of ecological houses, built to blend with an idyllic landscape. Deciding to widen her stagnating life in the manufacturing base, she takes a chance opportunity to become a Companion to a previously extinct species of human.
But Elise has secrets of her own that threaten to be exposed now that she is away from the safety of her home. And while living in the museum, Elise realises that little separates her from the other exhibits…

“The Museum of Second Chances has many interesting and complex characters; smart and pertinent commentary to give about society, history, and truth vs what we learn; and it is incredibly well-written. I devoured this book in two days and I would happily recommend it to everyone who is looking for an interesting new novel to pick up.”
“A different dystopian novel. In years past the Pandemic, class and separation of people is still alive and well, as is the need to understand only parts of the past. A look at the engineering of traits and people and possible consequences. Leaves a reader wanting a book two.”
JENA’S REVIEW
The Museum of Second Chances by A.E. Warren
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This dystopian science fiction book is centered around an astounding question- “What happens when the future recaptures the past?” The story blends well-developed and appealing characters with an interesting plot centered on genetic engineering. I wish I could visit the post-apocalyptic world showcased in the novel.
While this book may be directed toward YA readers, I easily became immersed in the world presented in this story. The book is thought-provoking as it asks us, “What does it mean to be ‘human’?
I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, because it’s fresh and original. After a world-altering viral pandemic, genetic engineering was the means to recharge the population. Now, there are different levels of humans, based on engineered traits. Elise is a Sapiens. There are levels below and above her. As an example of the fascinating detail in the book, Sapiens like Elise, have two syllable names. The group below Elise has one syllable names, if they have names at all. Groups above Elise have three and four syllable names.
When Elise leaves her sheltered family home and takes a job at the Museum of Evolution, her world and ideas change. Perhaps there is more to life and relationships than genetic engineering?
This is the first book in a planned series, and I know I will be reading more! This part ended in a dramatic and thrilling way. Thanks to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for a review copy.

AE Warren lives in the UK. A not-so-covert nerd with mildly obsessive tendencies, she has happily wiled away an inordinate amount of time reading and watching sci-fi/ fantasy and gaming. She is interested in the ‘what ifs’.
The Museum of Second Chances is her first novel and she is currently writing the third book in the ‘Tomorrow’s Ancestors’ series.
